Dimensions and weights

The permissible dimensions and weights for letters, parcels and pallets are defined here.

Dimensions and weight of different consignments

Below you will find information regarding the allowed dimensions and weights of different consignments.

Letters

Letters can be sent as postcards, in envelopes or in tubes. Letters may weigh up to 2 kg. However, letters sent with the Värde (Value) service may weigh up to 20 kg.

Size guide for letters in an envelope
Length: min. 14 cm and max. 60 cm
Width: min. 9 cm
Length + width + thickness combined can be max. 90 cm.

Size guide for letters in a tube
Length: min. 10 cm and max. 90 cm.
Length + double diameter combined can be max. 104 cm and min. 17 cm.

Bulky letters
Letters/tubes with a thickness/diameter greater than 30 mm, or a short-side greater than 250 mm, are considered bulky (does not apply to International Registered Mail). As of January 1, 2022, the fee for bulky letters only applies to shipments.

The respective fees are defined in PostNord’s price list applicable at any given time.

Volumetric weight

In some cases the volume is converted into weight. Some parcels are light but at the same time require large resources with regard to handling. For this reason, we convert the volume to a weight by equating each cubic meter to 280 kg.

If you are a service agreement customer, or pay the freight via postnord.se, you pay for whichever is greater – the actual weight or the volumetric weight. This is standard practice in the industry. Sometimes, volumetric weight is also called weight by volume.

In the following four cases, we charge based on whichever is largest – the actual weight or the volumetric weight:

  • Domestic parcel services, in the case of service agreement customers or if freight is paid via Shipping Tool
  • International Parcel, in the case of service agreement customers, or Parcel Post International if freight is paid via Shipping Tool
  • PostNord Pallet, only available for service agreement customers
  • International express services

An example of how volumetric weight is calculated:
A domestic parcel measuring 0.5 × 0.5 × 0.5 m has a volume of 0.125 m³. To calculate the volumetric weight, the volume is multiplied by 280 kg (0.125 × 280, which is equal to 35 kg). If the actual weight of the parcel in this example was 18 kg, you would pay the shipping price for 35 kg (i.e. the largest of the actual weight or the volumetric weight).
